How to Write a Strong Literature Review for Indian Universities
A literature review should justify your study. Indian university examiners increasingly expect synthesis, critique, and framework development rather than annotated summaries.
1. Organize by themes, not by paper date only
Chronological listing is easy but weak. Group studies under themes linked to your objectives: constructs, methods, populations, and debates.
Each theme section should end with what remains unresolved.
2. Compare and critique findings
Show where studies agree, disagree, and why. Discuss sample limitations, regional context gaps, and outdated methods.
Critical evaluation demonstrates scholarly maturity.
3. Build a conceptual or theoretical framework
Frameworks connect variables/concepts and guide methodology. Explain why selected theories fit your problem and how they inform hypotheses or propositions.
A visual framework model often helps committees and examiners.
4. End with a precise research gap
Your gap statement should logically emerge from the review. Avoid generic lines like “few studies are available.” Specify what is missing and how your study addresses it.
Conclusion
Strong literature reviews synthesize, critique, and justify. If your current draft is mostly summary, restructure by themes and rewrite gap/framework sections first.
